At the foot of Kozjak hill, between Solin and Trogir is the Riviera of Kaštela that consists of a total of seven Kaštela (fortifications): Kaštel Sućurac, Kaštel Gomilica, Kaštel Kambelovac, Kaštel Lukšić, Kaštel Stari, Kaštel Novi and Kaštel Štafilić. The main road that connects them all is the old Kaštela road, today known as dr. Franjo Tuđman Road, the largest part of which was built in the period of general Marmont. The history of Kaštela goes back a long way so we can find the remains of early primitive men here, remains from the Illyrian period but also ruins from villas from the antique period. During the 15th and 16th centuries, Estate-owners from Trogir and Split together with the Clerics built castles to protect their estates and inhabitants from the Ottoman attacks. The fortresses’ walls overlooking the sea were built in the Renaissance style.
